C95400 Aluminum Bronze Alloy Used for MIL-B-24480A and SAE J461 Specs

Tim Robbins / April 27, 2018

Erie Bronze and Aluminum is a leader in producing aluminum bronze castings and regularly adheres to MIL and SAE specifications. Meeting MIL & SAE specifications is critical when manufacturing bronze castings for certain applications.  These specifications maintain consistency among all manufacturers producing comparable cast products to keep them safe and to code. Erie Bronze and Aluminum meets and exceeds these specifications. When required by our customers, our cast products adhere to MIL and SAE specs and many are manufactured with the C95400 aluminum bronze alloy. These castings in turn are used in heavy duty applications and have high resistance to fatigue and exceptional mechanical properties which makes it one of the optimal aluminum bronze alloys for many military and industrial uses.

Military Specifications: MIL-B-24480A, MIL-16540B, and MIL-STD-2175A

With Erie Bronze and Aluminum’s broad capabilities, we can produce to MIL specifications with excellent precision and a fast turnaround. Three common MIL specs, MIL-B-24480A, MIL-16540B, and MIL-STD-2175A, are met at Erie Bronze and Aluminum. The MIL-B-24480A spec ensures good corrosion resistance for general seawater applications, military tank fittings and other comparably large machines. The MIL-16540B spec is primarily applicable to phosphor bronze sand castings requiring good strength and resistance to sea-water corrosion. This spec is mandatory for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense when purchasing phosphor bronze sand castings.  Lastly, the MIL-STD-2175A spec is the overall classification and inspection of ferrous and non-ferrous raw material castings including C95400 aluminum bronze.

SAE International: SAE-68A, SAE-J461, and SAE-J462

SAE International provides various specifications for aluminum bronze metal castings used in the aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle industries. The three most commonly used specs for the C95400 alloy include: SAE-68A, SAE-J461, and SAE-J462. The SAE-68A spec is focused on connectors, electrical, rectangular, receptacle, and crimp contacts. Applications of the SAE-68A spec include gears, wear plates, bearings, and hydraulic valve parts. The SAE-J461 is used for cast copper alloys to maintain the electrical and thermal conductivity properties, mechanical properties, yield strength, fatigue characteristics, formability, and machinability of these alloys. Lastly, the SAE-J462 specification is focused on cast copper alloys used in aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle industries.

Our highly skilled bronze metal casters combined with our capability of casting materials to specific military (MIL) and SAE International specifications, makes Erie Bronze and Aluminum your first choice for military and industrial aluminum bronze castings.
