Copper Bismuth Castings: C89833

On January 4th, 2014, the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act (RLDWA) took effect, which redefined what “lead-free” meant for plumbing components that contact potable water. As a leading foundry and sand casting manufacturer, Erie Bronze & Aluminum adapted to changing requirements and added C89833 bismuth brass alloy casting services. With a minimum 86% copper composition, C89833 acts as a lead-free alternative to leaded alloy C83600 and provides similar friction and wear properties and adequate corrosion resistance.

C89833 bismuth brass alloy is compliant with the legislation included in the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), the S.3874 Federal Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act, and is also compliant with international NSF/ANSI/CAN 61-2022 standards. It features a similar density to leaded alloys while remaining completely non-toxic with excellent casting properties and minimal post-casting machining required.

Applications for C89833

As mentioned, the leading application for the C89833 bismuth brass alloy is in various pipes, valves, and fittings used to transport potable water. In applications that require sand casting, Erie Bronze & Aluminum can meet ASTM B584 standards that cover castings for general applications. This includes determining that the mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation, all meet specific values.
